Over 1,000 applicants apply over 400 available positions at Generac

Governor Scott Walker visited Generac this week, and announced that they'll be hiring hundreds of workers. Since then, the company has been swamped with calls and emails, and Wednesday night, they held a job fair, where turnout was higher than even they expected! Some job seekers waited up to an hour for just a few minutes in front of a job recruiter.

The line wrapped around the Generac warehouse Wednesday night, and the job fair started forty minutes early, and ended almost an hour later than scheduled, because of the over 1,000 applicants.

Matthew and Erica Asman were just one couple hoping for some luck Wednesday night. Matthew used to work at Generac, and it's where he met his wife, Erica. Erica started two weeks after Matthew, and then Generac cancelled third shift, and both left. With a baby on the way and another child at home, they know they need something soon.

"I need a job. I've got a little one, and I've got bills to pay," Erica Asman said.

Generac has 300 to 400 jobs available at facilities in Waukesha, Whitewater and Eagle. There are also 50 to 60 jobs at Generac's newly acquired company, Magnum, in New Berlin.

"We are hiring from entry-level manufacturing, entry-level office, all the way to management, engineering, customer support, sales, you name it, we likely have the position," Generac Vice-President of Human Resources Rhonda Matschke said.

The lines Wednesday night were just a reflection of the eight percent unemployment rate in the state of Wisconsin, and a sign that though the economy has improved slightly, there are many still struggling to find work.
