City of Milwaukee winter parking regulations begin Thursday

The City of Milwaukee winter parking regulations begin Thursday, December 1st and extend through March 1, 2012. During this time most residential streets will require alternate side night parking.

Although most streets will require alternate side night parking, there are exceptions to this rule. All major arterial streets and bus routes prohibit overnight parking. These streets do not have signs posted. Also, several streets on the east and north side that allow overnight parking on both sides of the street will require alternate side night parking. There are no signs on these streets either.

Alternate side night parking means on odd-numbered days, you can only park on the side of the street with odd-numbered addresses. On even-numbered days, you park on the side with even-numbered addresses.

Parking Enforcement Manager Tom Sanders say to avoid getting ticketed or towed, make sure you know the rules, and check the street signs, though some streets have no signs posted, so it's best to check with the city, or look up the information online.

"During inclement weather, we need to have the streets clear so the snow plows and the emergency vehicles can get through if needed," Sanders said.

If you have questions or concerns about the winter parking regulations you can click here. There is also a Parking Information Desk you can call at 414-286-8350, 24 hours per day.

The Department of Public Works will offer a text message alert system. This alert system will notify residents and businesses when Milwaukee declares a snow emergency, or when the 4-inch rule is in effect. If you wish to sign up for alerts you can log on to www.milwaukee.gov/mpw.

The Department of Public Works Parking Enforcement encourages residents to follow all parking regulations. This will help protect the safety of all residents and assist with effective snow removal.
