Three rescued after car falls into Shawano Lake

SHAWANO (AP) -- Three people, including a 10-year-old child, were rescued from the roof of their car after the driver went into open water on Shawano Lake.

The Shawano County Sheriff's Office says the car sank into about five feet of water Saturday evening. The trio in the car climbed to the roof and called 911. An airboat had to be used to rescue them.

The sheriff's office says the rescue took about 17 minutes. The three were wet and cold but uninjured.

Also Saturday, a Madison man's all-terrain vehicle and ice shanty fell through the ice on Lake Mendota. He didn't fall in and was not injured.

Officials say extreme caution must be used on lakes. This year's warmer winter has made ice conditions inconsistent.
