Officer Frank Vrtochnick writes a note to co-workers, community

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Police Officer Frank Vrtochnick is thanking fellow officers and the community for their support after he was critically hurt by a hit-and-run driver on Christmas Day.

Vrtochnick is recovering at home -- and with the help of the Milwaukee Police Department -- posted the following message on Facebook.

"All Law enforcement officers each day put their lives on the line to protect and serve the community for which they work. This I believe is a big distinction of our profession compared to many others.

Unfortunately, on December 25th, 2011, I experienced a traumatic event while serving the community that will change me for the rest of my life. Again, this is where I believe another distinction exists between the law enforcement profession and many others. The overwhelming support that I have received from my fellow brothers and sisters in uniform has just been tremendous. The outreach and support from the community, from people that I have never even met, is just incredible. These are the types of things that make this profession so amazing and make me proud to be a part of it. Be assured that the support from fellow officers and the community is what will make this long road of recovery easier. I can't wait to be back serving my community alongside my fellow officers, God bless you all."
