Federal officials approve $1.7 billion to rebuild Zoo Interchange

MILWAUKEE -- It's been in the works for the past three years, and finally, the Zoo Interchange - the busiest interchange in the state, will be rebuilt.

Federal officials approved the $1.7 billion plan to rebuild and expand the Zoo Interchange. The aging interchange is a central hub of the state's freeway system.

The interchange carries about 300,000 vehicles per day.

The federal approval lets the Wisconsin Department of Transportation move toward the reconstruction that will last from 2013 to 2018.

The city of Milwaukee opposes the project. Mayor Tom Barrett says he supports rebuilding the interchange, but not spending the funds to add extra lanes to I-94.

Anyone who wants to challenge the federal approval has until September 2012 to do so.
