MILWAUKEE — As the tax deadline looms, many people are rushing to file their taxes, but not everyone can afford an accountant. That’s why the Social Development Commission, or SDC, is offering free tax preparation.
The SDC was on hand at Greater New Birth Church in Milwaukee Monday offering assistance to those who need it. “To make sure that we’re not only giving them their dollars and refund, but that they’re able to put it back into the community, as well as save some of their money as well,” Tiffany Pevey with the SDC said.
Anyone who makes under $56,000 is eligible to receive free tax assistance through the SDC. “It’s very relaxing to know that I’m getting everything, and I don’t have to pay anybody to get it done. It’s helping me save money in my pocket,” Demitret Melton said.
The SDC also helped those who qualify for the Energy Assistance Program get signed up. Those who aren’t caught up on energy bills could have services shut off on April 15th. “It will help them cover a portion of their utility costs, and if they take advantage of the services right now, We Energies could get them set up on a payment plan,” Sonya Eddie with the SDC said.
Rochelle Cannon said she is thrilled this help is available. “I was actually somebody that fell behind during the winter months, and especially with the economy being the way that it is and not having a job, to be able to come down here and get assistance is just great” Cannon said.
SDC officials say many appreciate the services provided, free of cost. “Hugs, clients have cried. I even see clients in the grocery store and at the gas station and they say ‘oh I know you. You helped me with my taxes. Thank you so much,'” Pevey said.
SDC officials advise against waiting until the last-minute to take advantage of this assistance.
