Parents of man murdered in 2010 finally see charges filed

MILWAUKEE -- It's been nearly two years since their son was fatally shot in an apparent car-jacking.  This week, a Milwaukee family learned two men have finally been charged with his murder.

The death of 25-year-old Vincent Cort has left a huge hole in the hearts of his parents, Donald and Shirley Cort.  They've spent the last 22 months talking to people on the streets, offering up rewards and searching for answers.

"It's been a long, a long day coming," Donald Cort said.

There's still a memorial to Vincent Cort at the place where he was shot outside Jack's Liquor Store at 50th and Hampton in Milwaukee.

Around 7 p.m. on June 12, 2010, Cort and a friend had parked there to go into the store.  Cort was driving the 1985 Delta 88 Royale he'd spent five years fixing up.  As Cort got back in the driver's seat, police say 20 year-old Laquan Riley approached the car.

The criminal complaint says "Riley reached inside the car with the firearm pointed and stated, 'Give it up.'"  Cort started to drive away and was shot.

Riley and 19 year-old George Taylor are charged with Cort's murder.  The complaint says Taylor gave Riley a "dark color hooded sweatshirt" to "conceal his identity," and that the two left the scene in Taylor's car.

"It was just a senseless thing that they did.  Actually, they were children when they did it," Shirley Cort said.

Days after Cort's death, hundreds mourned him at Firestone Auto, where he worked as a mechanic.  His parents have gotten tattoos to remember him.  His dad has tattoos with Vincent's name on both arms, while his mom has a tattoo over her heart. "Truthfully, I wish Wisconsin still had the death penalty, I really do, " Donald Cort said.

The investigation into Cort's murder was a lengthy one, which is why it took nearly two years to file charges.  Cort's parents want to thank the detectives who worked the case, for not giving up.
