Owner claims donkey found wandering in Town of Genesee

WAUKESHA -- A donkey found in Waukesha County has been claimed by its owner.

The animal had been staying at the Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) after being found wandering in the Town of Genesee on Wednesday, April 11th.

According to FOX6's news partners at Waukesha Patch, the donkey is a fan of ear rubs. “He’s a really nice animal – and he seems to really like the dogs that are playing in the neighboring fenced areas,” Jennifer Smieja of HAWS said in an email.

HAWS officials say the donkey was found wandering on Highway 59 in the Town of Genesee Wednesday, April 11th. While staying at HAWS, the donkey is said to have made many friends, both human and canine, and garnered attention from well-wishers and animal lovers.

“Both our shelter and the owner are grateful for the level of publicity that was given to the situation.  Because the donkey lives at a location off-site from the owner’s full-time home, he wasn’t initially aware it had gone missing. But, through various news stories and social media posts, the word got out quickly and the story ended happily," HAWS Executive Director Lynn Olenik said.
