Police in Reedsburg, WI criticized for Facebook postings

REEDSBURG, WI (AP) -- The police department in a small southern Wisconsin city is being criticized for posting mug shots of suspects on its Facebook page before they've been found guilty of an offense.

Reedsburg Police Chief Tim Becker says he's using the department's Facebook page to inform the public and remain transparent. But, Alderman Robert Parkhurst says nobody should be condemned before they have their day in court.

Parkhurst says he was on the page himself after being cited for filing a false complaint of police misconduct. The case remains open.

Critics say the public comments about the mug shots are offensive. Becker says he appreciates the interaction with the public through use of the website.
