Crews collect old prescription drugs during Medicine Collection Day

MILWAUKEE -- Crews collected tons of old and unused prescription drugs on Saturday, April 28th for Medicine Collection Day.

Cars rolled into Miller Park Saturday to drop off unused prescription drugs or medicine they don't want anymore.

Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District Public Information Manager Bill Graffin said, "Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem, especially among young people, and we also don't want people flushing them or pouring them down the drain. Research and studies show the majority of people who abuse drugs get them right from the home medicine cabinet or from a friend or neighbor's house."

Dropping medicine off at Medicine Collection Day is a safe way to get rid of it.

"If it gets into the hands of children, many of these drugs are toxic drugs.  A lot of medications have been sitting around in people's houses and they get toxic as they get older.  So, we really think we are doing an amazing job for our kids and our pets," Pharmacist Sally Fongaro said.
