Brewers Alex Gonzalez out for the season

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke says shortstop Alex Gonzalez will undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right knee and will miss the remainder of the season.

Gonzalez was injured Saturday, sliding into second base during the Brewers' 5-2 loss at San Francisco.

Signed to a one-year deal before the season with the hopes of shoring up the Brewers' defense, Gonzalez had performed well at shortstop and at the plate, where he was hitting .259 with four home runs and 15 RBI.

Veteran infielder Cesar Izturis is expected to get most of the starts at shortstop.

He is the second infielder in a week the Brewers have lost to a knee injury. First baseman Mat Gamel also tore the ACL in his right knee last week.
