First election in Waukesha Co. since Nickolaus stepped aside

WAUKESHA -- Tuesday's recall primary election was the first in Waukesha County since Kathy Nickolaus stepped aside as Waukesha's County Clerk.

In the past few elections, Nickolaus and her staff have been plagued with problems. In Wisconsin's presidential primary election on April 3rd, results were posted on the wall outside the clerk's office for the media to tabulate.

That led to changes in how votes are reported in Waukesha County.

Municipal clerks tabulated totals from two pieces of equipment at poll sites, added those totals together, and entered the totals into the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board's canvas system, instead of driving the results to the Waukesha County Clerk's Office.

The changes didn't affect voters at the polls Tuesday.

"I thought we had more voters than I've ever seen for this kind of an election, but we knew that, didn't we," voter Carol Conklin said.

"I didn't really have a confidence issue before," voter Ruth Krueger said, adding that she had no confidence issues as it related to the voting process Tuesday.
