MPD bicycle officers narrowly escape injury after approaching car

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee policeofficials say two bicycle officers barely escaped injury after attempting to make contact with three teenagers in a parked vehicle in a vacant lot in the 3900 block of W. Burleigh St. Monday afternoon, May 7th.

Police say the incident occurred around 1:30 Monday afternoon when Officer Raynoldo Roman and his partner, Daniel Smokovich approached the vehicle. Officer Smokovich approached the driver's door when the vehicle accelerated.

Officer Roman, anticipating the vehicle’s movement, quickly jumped off his bicycle. The bike was then struck by the vehicle.

The car then sped away, striking the porch of a home in the 3100 block of N. 41st St.

The 14-year-old driver and his 15-year-old and 13-year-old passengers all fled the scene on foot, but were quickly caught by officers. The car they were in had been stolen in the early morning hours Monday.

Neither of the officers involved was injured.
