Milwaukee man claims $2 million Powerball prize

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee man has claimed a $2 million prize from the Wisconsin Lottery's May 16th Powerball drawing. 63-year-old Joe White, the winner, purchased two sets of numbers for the May 16th drawing, adding a Power Play.

White didn't want to talk on camera Tuesday but showed FOX6 News his Wisconsin Lottery ticket stub just outside the place where he's worked for more than 30 years -- a car wash. He said he never dreamed he'd win!

Dennis Thompson is the owner of the gas station where the winning ticket was sold. White happens to be a family friend. "He comes in pretty much every day. He said he's been playing those numbers for several years -- the same numbers. He was at my daughter's wedding so it turns out it had more of an emotional impact than a random customer " Thompson said.

White's first set of numbers matched all five regular winning numbers, winning him $1 million. However, because White also bought Power Play, his winnings were doubled, making it a $2 million prize.

White plans to put his money into a retirement fund and pay off the mortgage on his home. He plans to keep on working, but he says this time, he'll be "comfortable."

White is the second lottery player to win the $2 million prized in Wisconsin in the last month.

After taxes, White was able to take home $1,345,000. The gas station where the ticket was sold earned $40,000 and the owner says he'll use that for upgrades to his shop.
