Groupon users could get cash after class action settlement

If you've ever bought an offer from Groupon, you might be getting an email this week! It's about a class action lawsuit and big settlement.

The settlement stems from a series of lawsuits that have been filed over the past few years regarding the expiration dates on Groupon's deals and how the company sold or advertised them.

All of the lawsuits were rolled into one class action suit last year, bringing Groupon's entire subscriber base into the mix. Just last month, Groupon chose to settle that case without admitting fault or wrongdoing, and will pay $8.5 million.

What that ultimately means in terms of dollars and cents paid out to users remains unclear. As with many class action suits, a good chunk of the money will go to the lawyers.

Groupon's customers will likely take home mere pennies.

Users who bought deals between November 2008 and December 2011 and submit a claim are eligible for a pay out. They'll get a "settlement voucher" redeemable for goods worth up to the purchase price they paid.
