Three charged with robbery of Russell Setum appear in court

MILWAUKEE -- Three men charged with the armed robbery of 24-year-old Russell Setum - who was shot and killed in the incident, appeared in court Wednesday afternoon, May 23rd for their preliminary hearing. However, the hearing adjourned before it was complete.

Setum was shot and killed Sunday, April 29th near 48th and Wright. 22-year-old Robert Cameron, 23-year-old Anthony Perkins and 23-year-old Nicholas Smith have only been charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery (use of force) as party to a crime.

One officer took the stand during Wednesday's hearing. He was the first officer to respond to the shooting. Then, the proceeding ended because prosecutors and one of the defense attorneys had court cases elsewhere and could not be present. The preliminary hearing will resume on Thursday, June 7th.

According to the criminal complaint, Russell Setum drove to his mother's house on April 29th. Leona Setum told police she saw her son go to his knees, raising his hands in the air. The suspect asked for Russell Setum's jacket and shoes. As Leona begged the gunman not to shoot her son, he told her, "Sorry Mama" and shot her son in the head and then in the foot.

Leona Setum was also shot during the incident.

Russell's vehicle was later stolen, stripped and burned.

FOX6 News spoke with Leona Setum Wednesday. She refused to go into the courtroom, but said she had to be there.

"I don`t think I could handle it. I`m really not ready to see their faces. They (the suspects) made some very poor decisions that night, and if it would be one of their mothers that this happened to, or their brothers or cousins, they would feel exactly like I`m feeling. Angry and brokenhearted," Leona Setum said.

Leona Setum says she's hoping and expecting more charges, and says she was told the case is still under investigation.

If convicted, the men may face 40 years in prison and/or $100,000 in fines.
