Two Marquette University students treated for malaria

MILWAUKEE -- Two Marquette University students who had been studying aboard in Guatemala were treated for malaria.

One of the students arrived back in the United States Tuesday night, May 22nd. The other was expected to return home Wednesday, May 23rd.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, malaria is not contagious. It is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. People with malaria often experience fever, chills and flu-like illness. Left untreated, they can develop severe complications and die.

Marquette University officials say before any of their students attend a study abroad program, they "offer extensive education through multiple orientation programs. The orientation includes a review of medical recommendations and requirements as well as preventative measures specific to the country of travel."
