16-year-old arrested for hitting girl with arrow in Campbellsport

CAMPBELLSPORT -- An arrest was made Friday, June 1st in the case of the seven-year-old Campbellsport girl struck by an arrow.

Aryanna Schneeberg was shot in the back with an arrow while playing outside her home.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff's officials say they have a 16-year-old boy in custody for shooting the arrow.

During an interview with detectives, the 16-year-old said he was trying to shoot a squirrel with his bow and arrow. Shortly after launching the arrow, he heard a young girl scream. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department determined the arrow traveled 80 yards before striking Schneeberg.

Doctors at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin removed the arrow from Aryanna. It had pierced her back and multiple organs including her lung, diaphragm, stomach and spleen.

Deputies say the 16-year-old and a 17-year-old friend who was with him at the time had previously lied to detectives.  Detectives decided to re-interview the teens after they say they had a "gut feeling."

Both of the boys have been referred to the Fond Du Lac County District Attorney's Office for charges.

"They should have owned up to it right away.  Especially after they heard her scream," Michelle Schneeeberg, the girl's grandmother said.

The 16-year-old went before a juvenile judge on Friday, June 1st and was released to a supervised residential facility.

The family hopes to receive an in-person apology from the two boys soon.
