Wis. Humane Society in talks to acquire Racine pet shelter

MILWAUKEE -- The Wisconsin Humane Society is in talks with Countryside Humane Society regarding a potential acquisition of the Racine-based shelter.

According to a news release issued Wednesday morning, June 6th, WHS executive director Anne Reed said,  “We have been approached by leaders in Racine about a possible acquisition of Countryside Humane Society, and we are excited about the potential to help animals in that community."

Officials say their talks are preliminary and it's unclear whether an acquisition will ever happen. That's in part because there are factors such as animal control contracts with municipalities.

The Wisconsin Humane Society is the oldest and largest shelter in Wisconsin. It was founded in 1879 and operates shelters in Milwaukee and Saukville.

The Countryside Humane Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1992 that provides animal control, adoption and other community services for Racine County residents.
