Police still looking for info. in hit-and-run that left boy critically injured

MILWAUKEE -- Robert Torres, Jr. remained in the hospital Wednesday, June 13th -- four days after a hit-and-run driver nearly killed him on Milwaukee's north side. The five-year-old boy has been in the hospital since Saturday evening, and police continue to look for the driver that struck Torres in the 4500 block of N. Teutonia.

Torres' family has offered a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

With tears in her eyes Wednesday, Torres' grandmother, Betty Broom said she misses the five-year-old boy every day.

Torres remained in critical condition Wednesday at Children's Hospital - a place Broom can't go because of a heart condition that has left her bedridden.

"I would see him every day, and I don't see him at all now," Broom said.

Torres was struck by a driver who fled the scene Saturday evening, while walking home from the park with his adult cousin.

Broom said the rumor in her north side neighborhood is that someone got a good look at the license plate of the car involved -- a tan, four-door vehicle, possibly an Oldsmobile.

A Milwaukee Police Department spokeswoman said detectives questioned a person of interest, but nothing came of it, and no one is in custody in this case.

Detectives say there may or may not have been another car involved in the hit-and-run.

As for Torres, Broom said doctors recently removed a screw from his head and he may soon be breathing without a ventilator. Broom said when she thinks about him in the hospital, it reminds her of what's missing from her life.

"Every morning before school he would come to his grandmother and give me a hug and a kiss and tell me he love me. I miss that. I miss my grandbaby so much," Broom said.

Anyone with any information in this case is asked to contact the Milwaukee Police Department at (414) 935-7360.
