Milwaukee Fire Department hosts "Firefighter For A Day" event

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Fire Department provided an inside look at their training Thursday, June 14th during their "Be a Firefighter for a Day" event.

Members of the media, politicians and other city employees had a chance to experience a day as a firefighter at the training academy.

The purpose was to show what it takes to be a firefighter, and show what firefighters go through nearly every day, as they fight fires and respond to emergency situations.

Participants took part in a number of different drills.

"We are going to do some search and rescue drills, we are going to do a live fire, and we are going to do what we call our 'swamp drill,' which is a drill of techniques for advancing a line through a house," Milwaukee Fire Captain John Schwengel said.

The fire department hoped Thursday's training would help others understand what they go through when called to a fire and how much training they go through before becoming a firefighter.
