16-year-old dies after being pulled from water at Quarry Lake Park

RACINE -- The Racine County Sheriff's Department has confirmed that a 16-year-old has died after being pulled from the water at Quarry Lake Park in Racine Sunday evening, June 17th.

Officials say the boy was in the water for about 25 minutes, after diving into the water from a pier with some friends. It took divers four minutes to find him once they were in the water.

Flight for Life was called to the scene, but was later diverted to a hospital.  The boy was rushed by ambulance to Wheaton Franciscan Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The boy was apparently with a group of friends who called 911 immediately.

Officials say the boy was not breathing when he was pulled from the water.

FOX6 News spoke with the mother of one of the boy's friends, who described the boy as very athletic.

"Comes to my house pretty much every day. He hangs out with us and we laugh and giggle. He's very helpful when he comes over. I'm just saddened by the whole thing. My son is sad," Ebony Jeans said.

Due to budget cuts, this is the first year that there are no lifeguards on duty near the area designated for swimming where the boy was pulled from the water.
