Extremely dry, hot conditions causing farmers headaches

CEDARBURG -- Extremely dry and hot conditions in southeast Wisconsin are giving farmers fits in 2012. And that was especially apparent at the Cedarburg Farmer's Market Friday.

Sandy Jaeger and her husband grow flowers and other plants to sell them at the Cedarburg Farmer's Market. Their days consist of two things right now -- working and watering.

A couple of booths from the Jaegers, Carol Butler cannot stop wishing for rain. In 2011, she had three tables filled with zucchini, squash and other produce by this time. This year, she's lucky to get a half bushel.

"Because of no rain, the plants don't grow.  They're actually going to start burning up if we don't get something soon," said Butler.

Butler is usually surrounded by competition. But the booths are barren -- and the other farmers just aren't selling.
