Storm with 90 mph winds knocks out power in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP)  -- About 190,000 ComEd customers were still without power hours after thunderstorms with winds up to 90 mph roared through the Chicago area.

ComEd spokeswoman Noelle Gaffney says about 20,000 of the original 210,000 customers who lost power had seen their power restored late Sunday afternoon, July 1st. She says it is not clear how long it would take to restore power to the rest of the customers.

Most of the outages were reported in Chicago and the suburbs to the north of the city.

The fast moving storm caught kayakers on the Chicago River by surprise, causing many of their kayaks to flip over. A fire department official says more than 60 kayakers had to be rescued. A police department spokesman says none of the kayakers was injured.
