Police say boy shot was victim of "ongoing neighborhood dispute"

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are investigating the non-fatal shooting of an 11-year-old boy that occurred late Monday night, July 2nd.

Police say Marquon Elliot was shot in the chest around 11:45 p.m. near 26th and Hadley. They do not believe Elliot was the intended target of the shooting.

Witnesses reported hearing between four to six gunshots.

Elliot was taken to Children's Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. He is expected to survive.

FOX6 News spoke with Elliot's family, who said the neighborhood where the shooting occurred is so dangerous, they don't like children being outside.

Elliot's grandmother, Cheryl Edwards said Elliot suffers from asthma, and stepped outside to get some fresh air.

Latasha Shaw's kids are cousins with Elliot. She says the boy stepped into a war zone.

"You can't enjoy sitting out here because it's always a fight every day, all day. I'm surprised they ain't out here fighting now," Shaw said.

Shaw said this time of the year is a dangerous time for kids on the block.

"Ain't nobody gonna run 'cause they say 'oh that's fireworks.' So they're gonna sit here and enjoy it. Anybody could've got shot -- anybody," Shaw said.

Police believe the shooter was aiming for someone else in an "ongoing neighborhood dispute."

Authorities say the incident remains under investigation. So far, no suspects have been taken into custody.

The Peace for Change Alliance has planned a rally for Elliot for Thursday night, July 5th.

Elliot's grandmother told FOX6 News Elliot should be released from the hospital on Thursday.
