U.S. Bank fireworks show a tradition for many families

MILWAUKEE -- The U.S. Bank fireworks show is a tradition for many, and some families use the event not only to celebrate America's freedom, but also as a sort of annual reunion.

Despite the extreme heat (with triple-digit heat indices) Tuesday afternoon, July 3rd -- David Saugstad said he took to Veterans Park along Milwaukee's lakefront because he wanted to kick off the Fourth of July holiday watching Milwaukee's amazing fireworks display.

"This experience for me is just wonderful. We're here with a perfect view," Saugstad said.

Some families told FOX6 News they have been taking part in the annual event for 10 or even 20 years! They say over the years, they have created their own traditions, and their celebrations have evolved.

"We started with two blankets and a couple of coolers, and evolved to two 10x20 tents, family and friends, and just going crazy and having a wonderful day," one camper said.

While they celebrated with friends and family, those awaiting the exciting display over Lake Michigan also reflected on the meaning behind the celebration.

"Respect our troops that have fought all these years for us and for independence. We're proud of being here. We live in a good country," one camper said.
