Forestry officials encouraging tree-watering bags

MILWAUKEE -- City of Milwaukee Forestry officials say it's not just the grass that's suffering from the extreme heat and lack of rainfall -- trees are also in need of watering. They're now encouraging residents to purchase "Gator Bags" to assist in tree watering.

Officials are asking residents to water trees between the sidewalk and curb using the "Gator Bags." The plastic bags wrap around the tree, and can hold up to 20 gallons of water.

The water slowly releases into the soil without running off.

City officials say this is an easy way to make a big difference and will only add four cents a week to the water bill to fill the bag.

"Over the course of the summer, they are looking at a 50-cent investment in their trees to help it become established and grow and provide shade and all of the benefits that trees provide that they desire when they request a tree to be planted," Milwaukee Forestry Manager David Sivyer said.

The "Gator Bags" would need to be filled with 10 gallons of water twice a week.
