Cooler temperatures make Kohler more comfortable

KOHLER -- After two scorching days, the third day of the 2012 U.S. Women's Open took place in much more comfortable conditions on Saturday, July 7th.

It allowed volunteers like Al Riel to focus more on their jobs, as they didn't have to look for heat-stricken fans.

"I helped two separate fans who were becoming disoriented and a little bit delirious because of the dehydration," Riel said.

Riel is among 2,400 volunteers who signed up for the week at the Blackwolf Run course. From opening ropes to manning concession stands, each of the volunteers was much cooler Saturday.

"Oh, a great day for golf," Riel said.

Although the temperatures were bearable, the golfers had trouble navigating the breezy conditions, which also caused problems for standard bearers, who escort the players along the course.

"Now they're complaining it's too windy! It blows the standard around," volunteer Steve Steinhardt said.

Volunteers also received a free pass for the event, even for days they're not working. They also got free parking, two U.S. Open polo shirts, a jacket and a hat.
