Exclusive: One of two survivors in wrong-way crash recalls tragedy

MILWAUKEE -- Just days before the Fourth of July holiday, three people lost their lives on U.S. Highway 41, after a crash caused by a wrong-way driver. The driver of one vehicle and his passenger were able to survive the crash, and that man spoke with FOX6 News one week later.

The vehicle's driver, who asked to be identified as "Randy," told FOX6 News he was heading northbound on U.S. 41, driving home from Summerfest with a friend, when he spotted headlights coming towards him.

"I knew something good wasn't going to come of it. I tried to lunge over to the shoulder and get away from the core area of the accident," Randy said.

The wrong-way driver hit a black Honda Accord, head on.

"The black Honda Accord kind of spun out, and then proceeded to hit my car, and then she kept going and struck the van," Randy said.

The wrong-way driver, 22-year-old Takeya Walker died from her injuries, as did the driver of the Accord -- 23-year-old Deandre Jackson and the van's driver, 45-year-old Kathleen Flessert.

Randy and his passenger were the lone survivors of the crash involving four vehicles.

"I'm very thankful. I mean, obviously the adrenaline, I was shaken up for probably hours afterwards. It was hard sleeping," Randy said.

Randy provided pictures to FOX6 News of the scene. 911 calls from deputies and witnesses describe the crash that shut down the northbound lanes of U.S. 41.

Randy says he hopes his experience can serve as a reminder to drivers to pay attention on the road.

"Stay focused. Make sure you know what you're doing. Wear a seatbelt. Don't text," Randy said.

Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials say the wrong-way driver never had a license. They are awaiting toxicology reports that could provide more insight into the cause of the crash.
