Gilbert Brown leads kids through football camp

MILWAUKEE -- The NFL season may be months away. But for a bunch of kids, football camp with NFL star and former Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Gilbert Brown is just as good (if not better).

For the seventh year in a row, Brown and his foundation held a football camp in Milwaukee's central city on Tuesday, July 10th. There was no shortage of kids eager to run the drills and learn from a pro.

"When I first saw Gilbert Brown I couldn't believe it!" one of the excited campers said Tuesday.

The kids who attended Brown's camp were taught more than the fundamentals of football. Brown and his team of coaches also give the kids a primer on positive personal skills.

"We got to say, 'Yes sir; no sir, yes ma'am, no ma'am.' Teaching us respect and how to respect people. We can't cuss," one of the camp students said.

"The fundamentals of life, of respecting each other, respecting authority. As far as school, you've got your teachers, and at home you've got your mother and father. Out here, you've got your coaches," Brown said.

With the help of donations and volunteers, such as the AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers, the three-day camp held at North Division High School is free each year -- and that includes food.

The camp runs through Thursday, July 12th when all the kids will play in their "Super Bowl." Kids ages eight to 12 attend from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Kids aged 13 to 17 are invited to the afternoon session from 2 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.
