Some in neighborhood upset after police shot man near 49th and Center

MILWAUKEE -- A 22-year-old man remained hospitalized Sunday, July 15th after he was shot multiple times by Milwaukee police. Police say the man pointed a weapon at them during an armed robbery, while neighbors told a much different story regarding what happened Saturday, July 14th near 49th and Center.

Milwaukee police officers on foot patrol confronted the man after they say a neighbor complained a man was walking around near 49th and Center with a gun.

Police say the man had attempted an armed robbery.

Sunday morning, with police tape still littering the streets, some who live in the neighborhood were still talking about the incident.

On the porch where the incident occurred, a witness who didn't want to go on camera, told FOX6 News the man was looking for someone in the apartment.

"He just kept pacing back and forth, and I guess he was looking for the neighbor, and just kept flashing a gun," the neighbor said.

The neighbor told FOX6 News he didn't feel threatened, though the man was flashing a weapon.

"He was just showing people what he had. He wasn't really pointing it at anybody or anything," the neighbor said.

Ray Phillip lives upstairs and says guns are common in the neighborhood. Phillip says he saw the suspect's gun in his waistband. Phillip said he wishes officers would have avoided shooting the man.

"As long as that guy didn't put his hands in his pocket and go for that gun, or get that gun out, you shouldn't have shot him," Phillip said.

Evonia Anderson lives nearby and bullet holes surrounded her home Sunday. She told FOX6 News a bullet whizzed by her as she sat on her front porch Saturday.

"It is just the grace of God that I'm still here -- that we are all still here, because I thought all these bullets hit this young man. I never saw anyone get shot like that, in front of my face like that. That was just ridiculous," Anderson said.

Police say the man has a long criminal history and was wanted on probation violations.

The officer who fired the weapon is on paid leave, which is standard procedure.
