DENVER (AP) — Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is calling hospital victims of the Colorado theater shooting to lift their spirits.

A spokeswoman for the Medical Center of Aurora says that Manning spoke one-on-one by phone on Saturday afternoon, July 21st with several patients brought there after the shooting.

Mequon native Carey Rottman was shot in the leg during the shooting incident. He was one of those who got the chance to speak with Manning. FOX6 News spoke with Rottman’s father, Dr. Dale Rottman who said his son was excited to talk with Manning.

“The nurse came in and said ‘Would you take a phone call?’ And he said “Who’s it from?’ And she said ‘Peyton Manning.’ And he said ‘I can take that call!’ That just perked up his day,” Dr. Rottman said.

Fifty-eight people were wounded after a gunman clad in riot gear opened fire in a crowded theater early Friday where “The Dark Knight Rises” was being shown. Twelve people have died in the massacre.

The four-time MVP signed with the Broncos this year after missing the 2011 season due to injury.
