Vigil held for 19-year-old man run over by bus

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Roughly 400 people came out to 89th and Carmen Thursday evening to remember 19-year-old Alexander Haskins. Also on Thursday, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office released its report after Haskins was killed after he was run over by a bus near 89th and Carmen Wednesday afternoon, July 25th. Haskins death has been ruled an accident.

Police say Haskins was called to the area by a cousin, who had been participating in a basketball camp at a nearby park. A bus was carrying a group of 11-12 year olds, and Haskins, with his aunt followed the school bus in a vehicle.

The Medical Examiner's report says Haskins got out of the car and started running after the bus, though the bus did not slow down or stop. Haskins apparently jumped onto the outside of the bus and grabbed one of the windows on the right side of the bus.

The report says Haskins began swinging and trying to hit someone inside the bus, when he either let go, or fell from the window, and was run over by the right wheel of the bus.

The report indicates witnesses said Haskins reached into his pocket as though he was going to pull out a weapon, though no weapon was found at the scene.

The Medical Examiner's Office reports Haskins sustained head trauma and abrasions to the face.

It does not appear the bus driver knew this was occurring. No citations are expected to be issued in the incident and no one is in custody.

Emotional family members were at the scene Wednesday evening, including the man's mother, ViAnna Jordan.

Haskins' uncle, Kevin Jordan spoke with FOX6 News Thursday.

"Right now, the family is in mourning. We want everyone to keep us in prayer," Jordan said.

Haskins' family is reportedly questioning the circumstances behind Haskins' death. Haskins' family says Haskins' cousin exchanged words with an adult on the bus, while the Medical Examiner's report indicates it was a child.

"He was hanging on the bus, trying to stop the bus, and the bus driver sped up, hit a turn and my cousin lost his grip. Right now, everything is being investigated and pretty sure when the investigation goes through, we will come up with our answer that we've been looking for," Jordan said.

Jordan led the recall effort against former District 6 Milwaukee Alderman Michael McGee, Jr., who was sentenced on a federal bribery conviction five years ago.

The Haskins family held a vigil for Haskins Thursday night at 8:00 near 89th and Carmen.

In a statement, Milwaukee Public Schools said it is following up on this incident as is appropriate. As would happen in any similar case, Milwaukee Recreation is conducting a thorough investigation.

Durham School Services was the company assigned to driving the group of children from basketball camp. They told FOX6 News the company is also conducting an investigation.
