Man restrained by Milwaukee police late Saturday night

MILWAUKEE -- A man is critical condition following an incident late Saturday night, July 28th that resulted in Milwaukee police having to restrain him.

The incident happened just after 10:00 p.m. at 94th and Carmen on the city's northwest side.  The mother of the man involved in the incident identified him as 31-year-old John Kriewalt.

Police responded to a call for assistance after the staff at a group home said Kriewalt became violent and was destroying property. After police handcuffed him and placed him in a squad car, he began to bang his head on a metal post in the back of the car.

Officers removed Kriewalt from the squad to avoid further injury, but he continued to resist arrest and began vomiting. Witnesses heard Kriewalt saying he couldn't breathe.

That's when they say someone started doing chest compressions. An ambulance later arrived on scene, and Kriewalt was taken to a hospital.

Witnesses told FOX6 News Saturday night the man was tased, but Milwaukee police are saying a taser was not used and there was no use of force by officers.  Additionally, the man's mother was told by doctors there is no indication the man was tased.

Kriewalt was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital after the incident. At last word, he was in critical condition.
