Inside Oak Creek’s Sikh Temple following deadly shooting

OAK CREEK —  Walls have been painted, drywall has been repaired and carpet has been replaced at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin after the deadly shooting. Kanwardeep Singh Kaleka, whose uncle, Satwant Singh Kaleka, was killed showed FOX 6 where the gunman went on a killing spree.

“This is where the first priest was out in this area when the gunman approached him and approached him as if he was going to converse with him and shot him in the chest,” said Kanwardeep Singh Kaleka. “He came around here and they were literally all cooking, similar to what they are doing right now, and he came in firing,” said Kaleka.

A bullet hit a refrigerator. “It actually came from the back wall. I don’t know when it exactly happened, but it seemed to have originated from there and come through here,” said Kaleka.

There’s a hole that will be left in the door frame as a reminder of what happened. “For me, when I first walked in, it was very hard to walk in knowing what had happened,” said Kaleka.

The temple has received an outpouring of support from the community and people from around the world.  Emilie Ratsimeuang lives in Wisconsin, but she came to the temple to represent the Lao community.  “We just want to let the Sikh community know we are standing with them.  We want them to know we are family, that we care,” said Ratsimeuang.
