Six-year-old girl stabbed multiple times, critically hurt

FITCHBURG -- Fitchburg police say a six-year-old girl sustained life-threatening injuries after being stabbed by her mother early Monday morning, August 13th.

Police responded to Anton Drive in Fitchburg around 2:23 a.m.

Police say the six-year-old girl sustained multiple stab wounds to her chest and back. She was taken to the hospital.

Police say the 30-year-old mother had multiple self-inflicted stab wounds and cuts.  The mother sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the child's mother went to a neighbor's home to tell them what happened after the child was stabbed. That neighbor called police.

"All indication we have at this point is that the child was sleeping and was attacked," Todd Stetzer with the Fitchburg Police Department said.

Police say no additional suspects are believed to be involved.

"It's disturbing, and we are trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together to see what would ever cause a mother to act this way toward a child," Stetzer said.

Police say there's no indication alcohol or drugs were a factor.

Police have responded to disturbance calls at the mother's previous residences in the past, but those calls had nothing to do with a child.

Police say the mother and child were the only ones home at the time. They don't currently have a motive for the attack.
