Chief Flynn holds roll call after three shot near 23rd & Orchard

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn held roll call in the street near 23rd and Orchard Tuesday, August 14th. This, after three individuals were shot in the area overnight Monday into Tuesday, and police say there have been numerous violent crimes in the neighborhood.

Police are investigating a total of four shooting incidents from overnight Monday into Tuesday. Seven people total were shot in less than 12 hours. One of those shooting incidents was a homicide.

Three of the six shot were shot in front of a house near 23rd and Orchard -- a house police say has been a problem in the past. An MPD spokeswoman says there have been crimes including homicide, shootings and arsons in the area -- many involving a house known for gang affiliations.

In July, a 20-year-old man -- Michael Trevino, was killed in a drive-by shooting near the house.

Maria Trevino says her grandchildren were victims of this most recent shooting.

"I hear all these gunshots. I heard my kids shouting and screaming, bleeding," Trevino said.

Chief Flynn says no one is cooperating with his department's investigation.

"We have an ongoing beef involving a number of people from different organizations and that cycle of violence has been continuing in a variety of ways -- shots fired into houses, shots fired into cars, cars set on fire, a homicide and a triple shooting. This is an ongoing beef and until people tell us the truth about it we're going to have a hard time breaking that cycle," Chief Flynn said.

"You have a situation where they've decided they're going to settle their feuds by themselves," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said.

The victims' family members say they'll continue asking questions. They say the house hasn't been involved with gang activity for years.

"We don't know why they keep coming to us. We want to know why they keep harassing us. Why do they target our house? Why do they target my kids?" the victims' mother, Marlo Ayala said.

"They didn't deserve it. They go to school. They have their little girlfriends," the victims' father, Juan Trevino said.

Police say their investigation into these incidents is ongoing. The injured victims are expected to survive their injuries.

In response to the violence, Milwaukee Alderman Bob Donovan issued a statement Tuesday morning, titled "We need a real public safety strategy -- not another street roll call."

In the statement, Donovan said: "It's my understanding that the MPD will hold a roll call in the street this afternoon. While I'm greatly appreciative of this response, I call them like I see them, and this roll call is all for show. The department will be pulling cops from all over the city to be at this roll call, meaning neighborhoods will be less protected than they should be. But within a few days, those officers will be gone, and it's unclear what then will happen at this troubled location."

20-year-old Michael Trevino was killed back in July in front of a home in the area. In an email to city leaders, Donovan has urged that a home in the area be shut down.

In his email, Donovan said: "For whatever reason, this property has become a magnet for violence and a threat to public safety and public health, and I need to know there is a plan in place to deal with the violence on this block before we lose all the good people in this area."
