Man accused of burglarizing businesses while on work release

MEQUON -- A 43-year-old man in the state prison system who had work release privileges is suspected of burglarizing businesses in Mequon.

Mequon Police Captain Daniel Buntrock told FOX6 News there were three burglaries and one attempted burglary on N. Port Washington Road in Mequon in June and July. Buntrock says the 43-year-old man was allegedly driving a transport van during his work release.

"I arrived at work and saw that the door had been broken into. It didn't look like much was taken. It's a violation of your privacy. You don't still feel safe. No cash is kept in the drawer anymore," Janet Turowski of Darkside Tanning said.

Turowski says the burglary at her business, Darkside Tan, was caught on surveillance camera.

"He knew exactly what he was doing. He knew exactly what he wanted and came in and took it and was gone within minutes. He looked right at the camera. I don't think he even knew it was there, so he had no idea that it was on camera," Turowski said.

Turowski says this is the first time her business has ever been burglarized. She hopes it never happens again.

Capt. Buntrock says the man's work release privileges have been taken away -- and he is  behind bars. Buntrock says the man had the van because he was assigned to drive other inmates to their work release duties.
