Viroqua man passes out in car with one-year-old, faces charges

ONALASKA (AP) -- A 20-year-old Viroqua man is charged with reckless endangerment after he was found passed out with a one-year-old child in a car.

Police say Cody Onshus had been smoking the prescription painkiller oxycodone.

Another motorist noticed the driver and a front-seat passenger apparently asleep in the car at a stop sign in Onalaska Friday, August 10th. The woman reached in to turn off the ignition and picked up the child.

Onshus wasn't breathing, and had reportedly turned blue. He and the passenger were taken to a hospital.

Prosecutors charged Onshus in La Crosse County with second-degree reckless endangerment and first-offense operating while intoxicated with a minor in the vehice. He was released on a signature bond.

Police say the child was turned over to Child Protective Services.
