“Day One” on general election campaign trail for Thompson, Baldwin

WAUKESHA -- The fight for retiring U.S. Senator Herb Kohl's seat is on following Tuesday's U.S. Senate primary. Former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson emerged victorious following the GOP primary -- defeating Eric Hovde, Mark Neumann and Jeff Fitzgerald. Thompson will now take on Democrat Tammy Baldwin in the race in the November general election. Each made jobs a priority on "Day One" of their general election campaign Wednesday, August 15th.

HUSCO International in Waukesha has hosted Thompson about four times. It also hosted Gov. Scott Walker back in May, so it was a friendly environment for Thompson Wednesday.

One day after his primary win, Thompson said lowering taxes and less regulation will be his approach to growing business and creating jobs.

"Truly concerned about the direction of this country. When we have a level playing field, we know Wisconsin workers win," Thompson said.

Baldwin highlighted the solar energy work of Helios in Milwaukee's Menomonee Valley. China has been accused of unfairly subsidizing their solar energy companies. Baldwin says she introduced a bill to penalize them.

"The bipartisan legislation that I introduced was wrapped into a larger bill. It`s been signed by the President and now there are tariffs in effect, and that`s getting stuff done," Baldwin said.

On "Day One" of their campaign, the Democratic Party called on Thompson to release 10 years of his tax returns. Baldwin says she's done that, and voters should see where Thompson has made his money in the private sector.

"Tommy Thompson supports a tax plan that would extend tax cuts for the wealthiest two percent and doubled down and do even more. That`s gonna help millionaires like himself handsomely," Baldwin said.

Thompson said he would release his tax returns too if he'd been a public employee for the last 10 years, but he hasn't been, so he won't release any.

"What part of 'no' don't you understand," Thompson said.
