Sikh Temple members react to Harmony Food fatal shooting
MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday night, August 15th at the Harmony Food Store near 38th and Locust. Authorities say 56-year-old Dalbir Singh was fatally shot around 9 p.m. during what appears to be an attempted armed robbery. Singh was a long-time member of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek.
Police say they have not taken any suspects into custody.
After learning of the news Thursday, Sikh Temple members were again mourning one of their own. This, after six Sikh Temple members were killed in a shooting Sunday morning, August 5th.
Flowers ordered from those around the world still lie outside the Oak Creek Sikh Temple after the shooting. Now, the Sikh community has taken another hit as their hearts are still heavy.
“It’s really sad because we lost another member of our congregation. We are already going through a difficult time, and another tragedy happened,” Sikh Temple Trustee Beant Singh Boparai said.
Boparai said his stomach sank after learning of the shooting.
“Such a good family. I know them the last 15 years with the kids. They are hard-working and really honest,” Boparai said.
Less than two weeks after Wade Michael Page walked into the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek and opened fire, there is still plenty of grieving at the temple.
“They need counseling. They are not talking. Some of them are emotionally disturbed,” Boparai said.
Amardeep Kaleka lost his father — the temple’s president, in the shooting. Kaleka said his mother was the one who picked up the phone Thursday morning to deliver the latest terrible news.
“As a group, our hearts just stopped. They literally were just doing their job. They happened to be in a bad neighborhood, but every neighborhood should be safe in America. At some point, violence against those people has to stop,” Kaleka said.
Police say their investigation into Wednesday night’s shooting is ongoing. Police say they do not believe this shooting had anything to do with the shooting at the Sikh Temple.
