Tall ships sail into Port Washington for Maritime Heritage Festival

PORT WASHINGTON -- Stepping into the Maritime Heritage Festival is like a step back in time.  Visitors are surrounded by ships from the 1800's, water and unforgettable scenery.

"You just feel like you're in a different world," visitor Marie Buschkopf said.

The festival gives people a hands-on experience.  People can check out "Madeline."  It's an 1860's replica schooner.

"Tall ships attract a crowd no matter where they go," boat captain Jerry Reynard said.

Visitors can also set sail on the Denis Sullivan.

"When you're out there on the lake and you're under sail and the waves are moving the ship, it's beautiful," visitor Lonnie Schlefke said.

On land , people can enjoy food and music.  They can also take a look at the festival from one of Port Washington's highest points in the historic light station.

"It makes people want to come here, not just for an event, but come here on a regular basis and experience it all four seasons," organizer Sara Grover said.

Festival activities are capped off Saturday night with fireworks at 9:15 pm.  It continues through Sunday from 11:30 am to 6 pm.
