Bank robbery, chase leads to police-involved shooting near Mukwonago

MUKWONAGO -- A bank robbery and chase leads to a police-involved shooting near Mukwonago Friday afternoon, August 24th.

The robbery took place just after 2 p.m. at the People's Bank just north of Elkhorn in Walworth County near Highways 67 and 12. The suspect was armed and got away with an undetermined amount of money.

Moments later, a Wisconsin State Patrol officer spotted a car matching the description of the suspect's vehicle and a pursuit began.

The 12-minute pursuit weaved in and out of Walworth and Waukesha Counties. At one point along Marsh Rd. just north of Highway J, officers deployed stop sticks.

In an effort to avoid the stop sticks, the suspect swerved and ended up heading directly towards a Walworth County sheriff's deputy. That deputy took action, firing his service revolver at the oncoming suspect's vehicle.

"The suspect vehicle drove around at a high rate of speed directly at my deputy.  My deputy had no other choice, he fired onto the suspect vehicle, wounding the suspect," said David Graves, Walworth County Sheriff.

Nearby neighbors witnessed deputies' efforts to stop the pursuit.

"They stopped and they shot spike strips down in front of the house and they told us to get in the house and the guy obviously didn’t make it, he crashed down the road here," said Dave Greenwald, who lives near where everything ended.

The suspect was struck and wounded by the gunfire. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. His injuries are not considered life threatening.

The deputy who fired his gun is a five-year veteran of the Walworth County Sheriff's Department. He will be placed on administrative duty while this case is being investigated by the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department. That is standard procedure in cases like this.
