Bank robbery suspect is a 29-year-old Racine County man

WALWORTH CO. — A 29-year-old man from Racine County is accused of robbing a bank and trying to out run law enforcement before he was shot by a Walworth County Sheriff’s deputy. The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department says the suspect was released from the hospital and taken to Waukesha County jail.

The incident began at the People’s Bank in Sugar Creek. An employee there called police and said the bank had just been robbed at gunpoint.

Minutes later, a Wisconsin State trooper spotted the suspect and the getaway car, and tried to pull him over. The suspect didn’t stop and took off at speeds exceeding 80 miles per hour.

“It was in and out of Waukesha County at times. He even went off-roading into one of the County parks in Waukesha County and came back out,” Walworth County Sheriff David Graves said.

Officers eventually cornered the suspect at Marsh Road and Highway J in Mukwonago.

“He was kneeling down to put the stop stick down and the car was bearing down on it. He had no other choice,” Graves said of the Walworth County Sheriff’s deputy who fired his weapon at the suspect’s car.

Graves said the suspect tried going around the stop stick and sped directly at the sheriff’s deputy and his vehicle. As the officer fired his weapon, he shot the suspect, ending the chase.

“He was released from the hospital and he’s being housed right now at the Waukesha County Department in our jail,” Captain Michelle Larsuel with the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department said.

The 29-year-old suspect remains in Waukesha County jail until his court appearance scheduled for Monday afternoon, August 27th.

The officer who shot the suspect is a five-year veteran of the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department. He reportedly has training with SWAT Team, and has been placed on administrative duty — as is standard procedure. Waukesha County is handling the officer-involved shooting portion of the investigation.
