Police investigating several weekend shooting incidents

MILWAUKEE -- Police are investigating several weekend shootings, including a double shooting where one man was gunned down while neighbors say he was trying to help others.

Teddy bears and flowers rested at the spot where loved ones said 22-year-old Leneir Johnson of Milwaukee took his last breath.

"I can’t get it out of my head," Gigi Humphrey said.

Humphrey said the horrific scene still plays in her mind. Humphrey said Johnson was outside of a home on 50th Street, along with some friends and neighborhood kids, when someone opened fire.

"We heard pop, pop, pop, pop. We heard four shots before we came outside,” Humphrey said.

“It’s just crazy. It’s like they just came from the back with masks on and just started shooting everywhere -- not caring if kids were out here or not,"  Perriana Welch said.

Welch said she and her son were shaken up. Welch said Johnson came to her child’s rescue when the gunfire erupted.

“Dudes came out and started shooting at him and he was holding my baby down from getting shot. I thank God for that, because that could have been my baby,” Welch said.

Next thing they knew, Johnson was fighting for his life.

“He was just laying on the ground, looking up like somebody help me. I lifted up his shirt and saw a gunshot on his arm and a gunshot on his side,” Humphrey said.

Johnson died at the scene.

Just one block over, neighbors said Johnson's friend was shot at as well.

Police say a 22-year-old man was shot on 49th Street and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

“The violence needs to stop.  It's not getting anybody anywhere besides dead or in jail," Welch said.

Saturday, detectives gathered more evidence to help identify the gunman who started it all.

“Whoever did it was heartless. They just stood over him and shot him. Just heartless,” Humphrey said.

Milwaukee police still have no suspects and are investigating to see whether the shootings are related.
