Man dies after crashing ultralight into Walworth Co. corn field

WALWORTH CO. -- A 61-year-old Darien man died after he crashed his ultralight aircraft into a corn field next to Big Foot Airport in the Town of Walworth on the morning of Wednesday, August 29th. The victim is identified as John Evans.

Evans said he had chest pains before taking off, but still decided to fly anyway. It appears he suffered a heart attack while in the air. It's also suspected the plane rolled on top of him after the crash.

The initial investigation shows shortly after take-off, the ultralight banked right and crashed into the cornfield adjacent to the grass runway. After Evans was removed from the craft and placed into the ambulance he lost consciousness.

Flight For Life was called but subsequently cancelled as Evans died at the hospital prior to their arrival.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been contacted. Since an ultralight does not contain a tail wing number, it is not a plane by definition and therefore not investigated as a “plane crash.”

An autopsy will be performed later this week to determine the exact cause of death.
