Actor Kal Penn speaks at Democratic National Convention

(CNN) -- Hollywood and politics have mixed it up plenty in the past, and the overlap is feeling especially apparent this election year.

Following Clint Eastwood's now famous conversation with an empty chair (and the pleas of Betty White fans to get her to the Democratic National Convention), actor Kal Penn had a turn at the DNC podium Tuesday.

Penn, an actor who's served as an associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement, brought sexy back to the DNC - well, #sexyface, at least.

The 35-year-old "Harold & Kumar" star launched a Twitter trend last night as he expressed his support of the Obama administration - and fired off a wisecrack about Eastwood's Republican National Convention speech.

"I've worked on a lot of fun movies, but my favorite job was having a boss who gave the order to take out bin Laden, and who's cool with all of us getting gay married," Penn said. "So thank you, invisible man in the chair, for that. And for giving my friends access to affordable health insurance and doubling funding for the Pell Grant."

Penn explained that he began volunteering for Obama in 2007, and he's returned to support the administration that he feels has brought about change.

"So before I close, and as I wonder which Twitter hashtags you'll start using when I'm done talking - hashtag sexyface - I ask all of you young people to join me," he said, promising, "You don't even have to put pants on."

And as he closed, he even used a "four-letter word": "Vote."
