Ceremonies at Marquette University, UWM mark 9/11 anniversary

MILWAUKEE -- Several ceremonies were held in Milwaukee on Tuesday to mark the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as well as honor the victims and our nation's troops.

343 firefighters gave their lives at Ground Zero 11 years ago, and their names were read during ceremonies Tuesday.

"343 names to read -- that's 343 lives lost. That's not including all the victims and the families that were impacted by this," Milwaukee Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Smith said.

Smith said Tuesday's ceremony highlighted the commitment of first responders.

"As firefighters, we take an oath that we're here to save lives and during that vicious attack on the World Trade Center, firefighters did what they do," Smith said.

On the Marquette University campus Tuesday, "Old Glory" covered the grass at the Alumni Memorial Union following a visit from the Young America Foundation's "9/11 Never Forget" project.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College Republicans laid 3,500 U.S. flags on the lawn as a means of remembrance of what happened 11 years ago.

"People need to recognize this is such an important day. It changed America forever and changed the world forever," UWM College Republicans Chair Taylor Thompson said.
