Second interview ordered after Donegan found not competent

MILWAUKEE — 32-year-old James Donegan, the man accused of stabbing and strangling a woman at Kilbourn Reservoir Park, was back in court Monday morning, September 24th. On the docket -- determining whether Donegan was mentally competent to stand trial.

A doctor's report on Donegan released Monday found he was not competent. But Donegan and his attorney disagreed with that finding. The court then ordered another doctor to interview Donegan. There will be another competency hearing on October 1st.

Donegan, the son of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Thomas Donegan, is accused of stabbing Teresa Boone to death Sunday night, September 2nd during an attempted robbery. The incident took place at Kilbourn Park in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood.

Donegan faces one charge of first degree intentional homicide and a second count of armed robbery with use of force.

Judge Donegan says his son has significant mental health problems and wasn’t taking his medication. In a statement to FOX6 News, Judge Donegan writes, “I really don’t want to go into any further detail about James’ illness, the possible criminal charges, or all the suffering Ms. Boone’s family and friends are going through.”

If convicted on the charges, Donegan faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
