Racine students organize T-shirt fundraiser in honor of Cary Robuck
RACINE -- 35-year-old Cary Robuck of Racine was one of three women killed in Sunday's shooting at the Azana Salon & Spa in Brookfield. Now, the Racine community is coming together to pay tribute to her.
Robuck was working at the Azana Salon & Spa on Sunday when 45-year-old Radcliffe Haughton entered the salon and opened fire, killing Robuck, 38-year-old Maelyn Lind and Haughton's wife, 42-year-old Zina Haughton, before killing himself.
"This is a very sad tragedy. I wanted to deny it. I didn't want it to be true," Thomas Stark said.
On the heels of this tragedy, the community is stepping up to help take care of expenses. Friends of Robuck's teenage daughter Mariah are leading the cause.
"I just felt the need to step up and raise money for this family," Stark said.
Students at Horlick High School in Racine are selling T-shirts that read: "One big city, one big family."
"I'm really hoping this can bring the community and southeastern Wisconsin together as a whole," Stark said.
The fundraiser caught the eye of Cherie Griffen -- the director of a domestic violence shelter in Racine. Griffen, along with the Racine County Sheriff's Office and Racine County District Attorney's Office are helping to sell the shirts at Horlick High School. They hope the T-shirt sales will shine a light on a larger issue.
"I am so proud of Racine and how quickly people have rallied. We can show support to Cary's family, but also as a community, we can mend and reclaim our commitment to end domestic violence," Griffen said.
With every T-shirt sold and every dollar raised, there is new hope for a family trying to heal after this tragedy.
"Everything we hear is that Cary was a very attentive, loving mom," Griffen said.
The shirts will be sold in the back of Horlick High School's field house Friday afternoon beginning at 1:30. The shirts cost $10.
The funeral for Cary Robuck will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 26th at Grace Church, located at 3626 State Road 31 in Racine with Rev. Joel Lindsay officiating. Private interment will be held at a Union Grove Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may meet with the family Friday at the church from 3 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m. Memorials to the family for Cary's daughter Mariah’s education have been suggested.
